David Cameron - re-inventing himself from corporate lobbyist to leader of the Tories - from right-wing eurosceptic to left of centre moderniser David Cameron is hot news as he tries to become the leader of the Conservative Party. Cameron has re-invented himself as a moderniser from the left of the party. It is a far cry from his days as a PR professional as Communications Director for Carlton TV. He has also come a long way from a decade ago when the industry magazine, PR Week, described him as a right-winger.
In 1996, the magazine said: "It takes more than losing an election to put off your average Tory candidate. Witness John Godfrey, head of corporate communications at Lehman Brothers, who, undaunted by his beating by the Scottish Nationalists in the Perth by-election, is to stand there again in the General Election. He joins a growing band of Tory candidates from the PR world like Carlton's David Cameron - mostly right wingers. Not that the Eurosceptics are having it all their own way".
Cameron is now seen as being on the left of the Tories and will pick up Ken Clarke's voters if Clarke loses in next Tuesday's voting round. Who would you vote for: Cameron: the ex-PR professional or Ken Clarke - the tobacco lobbyist? Tell SpinWatch |
