Commission prepares White Paper and Action Plan on Communication PDF Print E-mail

EurActiv.Com

The outlines of Commissioner Wallstr?m's plans to improve the EU's communication towards its citizens are becoming clearer after the Commission held a special internal seminar on 23 April.

At the start of the Barroso Commission, Commissioner Wallstr?m was given the task of finding ways to improve the Union's communication with its citizens. In a recent interview with EurActiv, Mrs Wallstr?m admitted that there had been slow progress on the new communication strategy because of internal struggles.

The College of Commissioners discussed a draft of the action plan to improve the 'corporate identity' of the EU on 23 April. The Commission is also preparing a White Paper on Communication, which will look at the role of other actors such as national governments, MPs or the media. Both documents will be presented within the next two months.

One of the main messages of these plans will be to listen better to the citizens (to "put ears on the EU"). With this in mind, the citizen's helpline services will be improved. Other elements of the strategy will include occasional meetings of the Commission in the member states and strengthening national representation offices. The latter will be given more leeway to talk to local and regional stakeholders directly.
