David Miller, 29 October 2006 Dr Ian Gibson MP has said he feels 'very silly and stupid ' about his support for Cancer United the latest patient pressure group exposed as funded by the pharmaceutical industry. Now it seems that there are a whole host of other connections between the drug companies and both patient groups and the All Party Group on Cancer which Gibson chairs. As it turns out Cancer United is being run by the Brussels office of Weber Shandwick, the PR company owned by one of the worlds biggest spin conglomerates Interpublic. In a flurry of letters supporting Cancer United we glimpse more connections between patient groups and the industry. |

Responding to an email from Spinwatch reported here recently. Reuters have acknowledged that their coverage of GM lobbyists has not been sufficiently open about their affiliations. In an email to Spinwatch Richard Mable, Editor, commodities and Energy, acknowledged that 'as you point out our story, does not make clear those affiliations so we have corrected the story to all our services and removed the previous version from our databases.' Spinwatch has written to Reuters thanking them for correcting their reporting. |

Reuters falls for Biotech spin |

Spinwatch has today written to reuters to complain about an article which seems to have been the result of a successful Biotech industry spin operation. Any response will be posted here. Dear Reuters I would like to raise a concern I have about the Reuters article, 'Africa seen accepting GMO crops more in future', which was published in October out of Johannesburg (Here). My concern is with the superficial coverage the article provides and what I would see as clear PR manipulation of your journalist(s). The article is based overwhelmingly around the views and comments of Florence Wambugu who is described in the article simply as "a Kenyan biotech expert". The article reports her view that "homegrown projects" will win acceptance for GM crops in Africa where she says "resistance has been against foreign companies". The example given of a "homegrown" project is that of a consortium headed by Wambugu's 'Africa Harvest' group, which is developing "a GMO strain of sorghum with higher nutritional content." My concern is that the article fails to place any of Wambugu's claims in context. For instance, the following press release (July 1, 2005) from Pioneer Hibreed, a subsidary of DuPont headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, makes it clear that it is a major player in Wambugu's consortium. http://www.seedquest.com/News/releases/2005/july/12684.htm |

Psyops units in Iraq plotting to manipulate next elections |

According to US military sources Psyops units are currently active in Iraq scoping out venues for voter registration for elections in Autumn 2005. According to Kenneth Anthony a 2nd lieutenant with the 155th Brigade Combat Team in Iraq in a report in the Mississippi Daily Journal 'My platoon was escorting the PSYOPS team (psychological operations) to the police station to conduct an assessment of its suitability as a voter registration site for the elections in the fall.' As is well known the object of psyops in the US and UK militrary is to manipulate perceptions (in Iraq and elsewhere) in favour military and government interests. Making the local police station a voter registration centre in an area of Iraq where the police are regarded as collaborators with the occupation does not suggest a great desire for maximising voter registration. More on this as we hear about it... The World Tribuunal on Iraq has indicted media organisations, including the BBC for their role in aiding and abetting US and UK war crimes in Iraq. The World Tribunal received scant attention in the Western media and there have been no headlines reporting the findings on the media. The Tribunal issued its findings on 27th June after a gruelling and harrowing four day session hearing evidence. The charges laid 'Against the Major Corporate Media' were as follows: |
